Greek Plays in Cambridge
For about 10 years Prof. Patrick Boyde has been producing semi-staged Ancient Greek plays in Emmanuel College Theatre, in February of each year. These are arranged to have up to 6 readers at lecterns, and although no costumes, there is dramatised reading. The plays are generally shortened to last about 1 hour, and specially commissioned translations of the originals were made for these productions. The plays are broken into sections with short musical interludes (Bartok), performed live by two violinists. In order to assist the audience, the English surtitles are projected with graphic images to clarify who is speaking and the course of action. I was asked to supply new images to compliment classical Greek Vase images. The plays are by Sophocles.
