BIOGRAPHICAL

Sam Motherwell came to Cambridge in 1968 as a post-doc to work on research in chemical crystallography at Cambridge University. He retired in 2006 from the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre. His art was a spare-time activity, in a figurative graphic style, specialising in the Mill Road area of Cambridge where he still lives. Preferred media are pen and ink, charcoal, linocut and collage.

In January 2025 he gave up his studio, and active exhibiting. This website is now basically an historical record:  items are no longer available, having been sold, given away, or destroyed. He has continued some art activity, including book illustration, see heading ILLUSTRATION.

In May 2025 he was approached by Mary Burgess, Local Studies Librarian at Cambridge Central Library. All his available Cambridge artwork has been donated to the Cambridgeshire Collection. and has been entered in the library catalogue. There is particular focus on the Mill Road area of Cambridge.  To view the collection, contact the Cambridgeshire Collection on 01223699755. Mary Burgess writes, 'These items will be of great interest to a wide variety of people, including those studying art and the history of Mill Road. I look forward to their visits'.

The material is unsorted, but there is a photographic record of all deposited items, over 700, ranging in size from tiny 3x3 cm to A2 charcoal drawings. A small exhibition was given in Nov 2025 at the Central Library; a representative sample of the works may be seen in this photographic link
